Regardless of your background, play the game. Study, get some sim practice if you think you need it, and don't be cocky.
This applies to any interview, anywhere...if the interviewer is pushing your buttons he's (probably) not being a tool, he just wants to see how you react. Calmly de-escalate while keeping your dignity. They don't want to hire pilots who will tend to get in fist fights with drunk pax.
There's some good advice in here. It is
quite demoralizing to play that game and find out they aren't just pushing your buttons, they are actually being rude and unprofessional. That happened to me at the Republic interview. I sat there and answered questions correctly after smoking the sim and two writtens, only to have them actually become angry at me and insult me because they couldn't get me riled up. This isn't my first rodeo, I've had many jobs before in aviation; ones that are very high stress. When it's game time, you can't get my feathers ruffled. When it's over, it's time to decompress and reflect, and the Republic interview really bothered me. It still bothers me that I spent the amount of time and money I did to go there and be ready to kill it, and still be treated like that.
I can't get much in the way of interviews, and now I'm gun shy. The last year or so has been very, very bad for newcomers. I come well qualified and recommended, I have internal recs at just about every regional and major I can think of, no failures, no criminal past, a decent degree and a skillset forged in flying the mountains and coastlines of CA, OR and WA.
I don't expect much in this world, but I can
hope for opportunity and a chance, because I deserve it and I've worked for it and will continue to work for it. The principal that I'm looked down on (at interviews) as someone less than deserving of professional courtesy because I don't have years of 121 or 135 experience is angering, to say the least.
It sounds like Skywest may be a bit more professional of an organization than Republic, but mileage varies. Everyone told me the Republic interview was decent, but then I shared my story and others came out of the woodwork to share their horror stories.
