That has always been the rumor, but Alaska has been clear about their thoughts on the matter. No doubt DL could still offer a boatload of money if it would convince the BOD/shareholders, but I'm not sure if they would be in favor and/or the DoJ might not like that. At least VX is a small carrier, and could make the case that they are struggling in this environment and need a merger to survive.
It appears nothing is going to happen in the near term. In fact, Delta adding flights on same city pairs as Alaska reduces the likelihood of DOJ approval. That said, I think Delta may have a 3 to 5 year plan to buy Alaska after beating them down on price. At that point Delta could pull flights off same city pairs on their own or as some DOJ agreement where other airlines get benefit (DOJ is supposedly about competition even in the "unregulated" airline industry).
