There are many, many ways that the company could have asserted that mainline partners not hire RJET pilots. I suspect that an e-mail or letter would have been the last method by which they would have done so, as either is easily discovered as evidence.
The union has said that RJET has or is encouraging mainline airlines to not hire RJET pilots. RJET sent a letter to the union threatening to sue if they didn't stop spreading "unfounded accusations" and the union's lawyer told the company, in legal terms, to "pound sand."
The union is pretty confident that this happened. So confident, in fact, that when the company threatened to sue, the union essentially said, "Go right ahead."
I believe the union leadership.
