I'll never forget a discussion I had with an AA fuel geek at operations. He was a 23 year old spreadsheet guru and not a pilot.
AA had a tendency to ferry fuel into Guatemala City. We were continuously landing very close to max landing weight, night after night, on a treacherous runway. I told him "It's an accident waiting to happen. Please stop."
"But it's legal."
"You don't understand." And I explained the dangers in detail.
"But it's legal."
He was an immovable, clueless stone. His job was to pinch pennies. It's a scary attitude that is becoming all too common.
Rest rules for ALL crews need some severe overhaul.
