Honestly there are plenty of highly selective positions in the armed services. In fact, military promotion is all about the "rack and stack". But that doesn't guarantee you a position in a major airline, you don't "deserve" that position, it has to be earned, and attitude is definitely part of it. I'm glad we hire people that work well with others.
That's the one thing I miss about the Air Force...hard work, commitment, integrity meant you rose above your peers. You weren't just a number. OTOH, being just a number has its merits also.
