I used to be in a flying club where one of the older pilots was into renting a G1000 Skylane to go to the Bahamas. He dropped a lot of cash no doubt but he also gave a nice slideshow on how to do it wisely & safely, everything from paperwork to flotation devices. I suggest see if you can find such a presentation, maybe look at AOPA as a starting point.
