It costs Delta nothing to offer a flow in fact it saves them money by not having to interview as many people. Having to shut us down because of staffing does cost them money because the lift we provide will be more expensive, hence costing them money. And it's all about the money.
It costs them in terms of erosion to their culture, which is VERY expensive in the long run. One bad pilot can cost an airline 100s of thousands of dollars throughout a pilot's career with excessive sick calls, training issues, and other abuses of the system. The cost of interviewing and selecting the right pilot at DAL is about $2500. If I were a legacy carrier like DAL, I'd rather pay the $2500 up front and maintain my own hiring standards.
It's why we'll never see DAL institute a flow through agreement.
