By this point, it is no secret that Atlas wants a 767 minimum fleet size of 20 aircraft. Atlas approached Global about purchasing North American when North American went into bankruptcy. Global wanted to only sell it as a package deal with World. Atlas only wanted the 767s and not the MD-11s, the deal fell apart. It would not suprise me at all if talks have resumed. Anything is possible for the right price.
With all that said, these rumors of Atlas buying a certain competitor always seem to pop up when things are looking bleak at a company. We were also rumored to be buying Southern at one time. The rumor was so strong that our unions met to discuss possible integration scenarios.
Didn't World just lose a bunch of flying with the military that is going to force more furloughs and parking more airplanes? I have heard a fleet of 5 at World and 5 at North American, maybe Global wants out, but why go through bankruptcy then unless that is to shed costs for a higher sale price.
Who knows, is this Purchase, New York source a first hand source or a friend of a friend, etc?
