This reactionary exercise is exactly what happens when you don't have a retirement age: the captain never quite thinks it's OK to relinquish the controls. He'll keep making a case that his experience his needed, and miss the moment when he became irrelevant and useless.
If anything, this adventure is evidence we need term limits for ALPA work. I think at most 2 terms as rep, or 6 years in administration positions, should be followed by at least 3 years without an ALPA function at the MEC or National level.
The organization needs to value new perspectives, and new people.
