Nearly every captain (or maybe just every captain) at Compass had their hotel paid for during training in Montreal. Since new hires are typically first officers and first officers spend most of their time at work with captains I think its safe to say there is plenty of sympathy to go around. That said, your point is correct; if you are caught up on pay and hotel during training your cost/benefit calculation is screwed up. An airline career is a marathon not a 40 yard dash.
