Its a bonified "significant other" event I think. The intent is to make it a special event and not for casual dates. If you are really close to someone and want them to come, make your case and ask for an exemption. Haha. My wife (girlfriend of 7 years at the time) wasn't permitted to attend. I made a personal inquiry after class one day to see if she would be allowed. Bottom line; no ring on the finger, then your spouse probably isn't coming. She still wishes she could have gone, and to be honest, I wish she could have. She's been with me pretty much since I got my private pilot certificate. I'd have really liked to have shared the event with her.
