Unfortunately there was a negotiating "partner" involved in the UPA that had a short-sighted strategy involving large aircraft (cough, "jumbos," cough), pay bands, and the SLI.
It would have been funny had the long-term potential pitfall not been so obvious. At least the 777X won't see the light of day prior to the opening of the next contract so we can hopefully deal with this.
I'm surprised Boeing doesn't build a 500 passenger 737 and then United would try to make us fly it for guppy payrates. We could call it the "Super Guppy".
