Whether you flew from Miami or Montreal, you have to call India to get information about your missing bag. And when you do, you will find that the worker at the outsourced call center is checking the same Web site you have access to.

In a recent incident, a call center worker said he'd make some inquiries with United but later admitted he had simply logged on to the airline's lost-luggage site.
