In response to a PM suggesting pilots are both commanders and managers, where the forum reader also alludes to the SFO 777 crash, the following is also submitted for general consumption:

All licensed pilots are PICs. Their first solo made them so. The seat they're sitting in only determines whether or not they exercise that authority and are responsible for the flight. And PICs, as the acronym makes it clear, are commanders, not managers. That doesn't mean they shouldn't or can't manage something. It only means that their approach to all operational tasks ought to be goal-driven (i.e., applying command skills, asking “WHAT do do?”), not process-driven (i.e., applying managerial skills, asking “HOW to do something?”).

I suspect the Asiana 777 pilots tried to manage their flight when they realized something wasn't right, rather than take charge of it. It's an all too frequent response given the industry's flawed thinking and the training such thinking produces. And as long as it continues to convert J-3 “commanders” into “managers of flights,” such tragic events will continue to happen - unfortunately.
