If he's a 777B, he should have enough experience whether previous civilian job or the military. I'm by no means Chuck Yeager, or NewK but I went from the widebody world to my first capt checkout on a plane I never had flown as an FO. For that matter neither of my capt. gigs have been on planes I flew as FO. It's not rocket surgery.
