The 76T fleet is overstaffed by several hundred pilots already, in a year or two, it will be overstaffed by a thousand.
It is every airline pilots dream to get paid to sit at home. They will have to be dragged (bumped) kicking and screaming, out of that position.
This vacancy bid shows 756 staffing (fleetwide) of 94 over the MIN staffing level. The 756 pilot that are sitting reserve and not working are not the senior pilots in the CAT's.
I would love to sit at home and not fly, but that doesn't appear to be the makeup of the majority of UAL pilots. Most want to break guarantee. The junior line holders are getting low credit lines (because the senior bidders are requesting high credit and pay). If, as you suggest, it is every pilots dream to get paid to sit at home, then all of the reserve lines would be going to the senior bidders who are in fact requesting high credit flying lines.
My guess is that the 756 FO's in Den and Ord, who are junior line holders, will happily bid off the airplane for a left seat in the 737 or a 777 FO position.
Now, will the company have a displacement bid? Sure. Will junior 737 pilot be displaced? Remains to be seen. Read the contract; the company can control this if they choose to do so.
