Except your observation is incorrect. It was not "negotiations." It was more of a one way bankrupcy street. It was not "take pay cuts for jobs at mainline." Not even close. Not even if you word it "take pay cuts for a INTERVIEW at mainline." Now if you word it "take pay cuts or you will wind up like Comair, or have an even worse judge imposed contract rammed down your throats, oh and by the way here is an interview too..." then you would be correct. I don't know of anybody who voted yes solely for the SSP, they voted to have a paycheck while they wait for a call for another regional, major, or even non aviation job.
