That 2 years makes ALL the difference in the world QOL wise for the rest of their careers, but most importantly they will be SR Widebody Captains for 2 additional years at the END of thier careers. At today's payscales that is worth around $500,000.
Again, please explain how this is a dumb decision? Sounds like a great investment to me! I'd GLADLEY forgo $5-10k a year now for a couple years to turn it into half a mil.
To each his own though. Stick by your guns and you show'em what's right. There is only one rule in this career field: Maximum money for the least amount of work and the best QOL along the way.
Good Luck!
You are basing that $500,000 on a gamble. There is no guarantee of being able to move up to a major. There is no guarantee that something could inhibit movement. It also doesn't mean we have to sell out our current income levels to get that spot at the major airline sooner. Pilots at any regional can still competitively compete with guys at PSA for those major slots. Why sell out the regional pay scales on a gamble when there is no need to do so?? I think it's short sighted and selfish.
Also, the $5K to $10K is around 30 to 50 percent of a pilots yearly income at the first year level. That's not something to shrug off. Not everyone has the luxury to be able to afford to give up that money early in their career. They shouldn't have to give up anything. Anyone trying to afford a house and raise a family is struggling to do so on regional income levels. Is that acceptable to you? Future pilots should make enough money from the first day they step into the 121 world. Stop trying to prevent that. It's offensive that you don't care how low wages are right now.
