I don't think wages are an excuse. A lot of the captains I see look awful. They're swimming in their uniforms. It's embarrassing, and not just a regional airline problem. You can always pick out foreign crews because they look so much sharper.
Yes, I'm sure some of them do look quite sharp when they slam into the breakwall on final because their basic airmanship sucks.
Not so much after the evacuation though, I bet.
