While I agree with your post, I don't think the lifers are to blame. Each group of a seniority list has an interest in agreeing to these types of concessions. The lifers want security, the junior captains become senior, the FOs become captains, and the new hires hold lines.
The root of the problem is the lack of sacrificing for the greater good. People only seem to care about themselves.
