A 30 year old hired this year will be an MD-88 captain by age 38. That should make all the newbies feel good.......those guys in 00-01 thought the same thing the day they got hired though.
Got hired in 00, at that time people were making Capt on the -200 in MCO in about 24 months. Then 9-11, furlough and BK. So start building back and could hold any widebody FO position (yes even 777), and missed Capt MD88 by 1 month of seniority in 08, then the merger synergi's hit and haven't come close.
That being said, if what the head shed is saying is true, we are going to have a hiring spree like 96-01 so if you are hired at the beginning to middle then you will have a pretty good career and fairly quick upgrades.
