Never once has someone stopped me and said, "hey, ahh your roller board, it's a little beat up, are you sure you know how to fly a plane?" or "Hey your back pack, ahhh you know pilots don't carry backpacks?" the general public care for themselves and really don't care otherwise. Think about it the next time you don't let someone cross the street at a crosswalk because you are too lazy to stop or next time you don't hold the door for someone, why most likely you weren't thinking because you were two concerned with other things in your life. Everyone falls victim to it. And if people are concerned about a backpack or maybe an ear bud, maybe they should be concerned about what happens when the door is closed? Not being sterile below 10,000 feet? 8 hours of looking out the window, without someone opening up a newspaper? Or a sudoku? Maybe missing a taxiway because you didn't copy the instructions down? We are all victim too it.
This is a comical subject and each one of you who argues that looking professional is clueless. The people DO care that the people flying their airplanes look professional. It doesn't have to be a uniform but they would surely lose business if people showed up looking unprepared, dirty clothes and bed head. Should people in offices not wear suits to meetings? Should the military not be required to wear a uniform when they aren't actively in combat? Perhaps you'd be okay if your doctor came in looking hungover in a dirty coat with pj pants underneath. You are all only whining because it impacts you. Clean your uniform, take a shower, and just do your job that you signed on the dotted line to do. If you don't like it, quit. Please.
