Legacy American Eagle aka the real Eagle. Since everyone and their mother now flies under the AE brand L-AE is used to differentiate AE Airlines from all the others.
I am pretty sure anyone that flies from SkyWest, Republic and who ever else that does American flying does not refer to themselves as American Eagle. For anyone outside or the AE circle, I think you will find nobody really cares if you were Legacy American Eagle or not.
