I got a case of SJS and dropped out to pursue an opportunity flying jets. It all looked good on paper, I ended up in my mid 20's flying right seat in a heavy; but, in reality, I had already hit my glass ceiling before my career even started. The other guys my age that were hired around my hire date left after a couple years, going to work at places like Continental, United, Delta, Northwest, FedEx, UPS. and guess where I was? Sitting in the right seat of a 3rd tier ACMI. Great company, great people, great equipment; but, I was stuck with no options. I finally realized I needed to finish my bachelors degree and finished it online through Embry Riddle. But guess what, by the time I finished my degree, I was in my early thirties with a mortgage, responsibilities, mouths to feed and in my "comfort zone" with a nice seniority number at a decent ACMI making good money and no desire to start over at the bottom of a seniority list. If I had finished my B.S. instead of taking the first SJS job offered to me would I be flying for a legacy? Who knows?? It's a 6% longshot for even the most qualified candidates, I would never be so narcissistic and presumptuous to think that if I had been able to check that box, I would have had a legacy job thrown in my lap; but, at the end of the day, I would have at least had a fighting chance. That's all I'm saying to you, give yourself a fighting chance, finish school! You will never regret it. The equipment, hours, type ratings will all come in good time, build it on a solid foundation and you will thank yourself when you get to be my age. Again, not telling you what to do, just giving you my .02.
