I agree, not toolish so much as annoying.
I like pilots in general in that we (as a group) are generally not babble-heads. A comfortable silence works fine, unlike some other work groups to whom even 2 seconds of silence is death; there must be continuous talk at all times.
This I think connects to what you are talking about in that there are exceptions, and some guys feel like they have to talk to everybody they see and know, even if it's an inconvenience to you.
The easiest escape method - make the "telephone" signal with your hand, and pull out your phone. "Got to make a couple of calls." Then head on your merry way to some private area to read, sleep, eat, whatever.
