These are guys YS'ing on X days not on their on-call days. I get throwing one in when on call, but doing them on your x days is working for free unless you are over the reserve cap. There are reasons for doing them on an X day, but not very many and they are almost always for free.
Sounds like a future captain who will make his pre departure PA standing in the cabin to describe the 45 min flight to the pax, then make a climb out PA, a cruise PA, an arrival PA, most of which end in "welcome aboard." Then shut down the remaining engine as he makes final brake application with his right hand on the fuel switch before the FO can get to it just to save that extra .002 sec of fuel.
