AA73 beat me to it. The MD-80 is going to be around for a long time yet.
I jumped on the MD-11 years ago when it was being sold to FEDEX, and was a dying system. I'm glad I did, and I enjoyed it, but there's something to keep in mind when you bid a dying bid status...
First, the work load on the MD-80 is higher than other jets, but that's not a big deal. The main objection - as the jets are parked and pilots flowed off, the flow (displacement, stand-in-stead) is from the top down, meaning if you are really junior, you may be stuck there for quite a while.
That may not be an issue at all if you enjoy the jet and the flying.
