Much like Delta when open time drops SW pilots start grabbing what they can at straight rates instead of 1.5 rates. The huge difference between SW and Delta is they have no cap so you can pick up to FAR limits at straight rates. That leads to rushing every flight to keep block hours down and allow for more trips for pay under their system.
Not to mention when everyone does that all the time, the historical block time averages drop and then it becomes harder to do it. Eventually even "airspeed alive" taxis, 250 til the marker and all the shortcuts in the world won't get you under block very often, and the company needs fewer pilots to fly the same schedule. #biwinning
