Default Propeller separates!

Pilot Uninjured After Losing Propeller, Landing at Old Horse Track | NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth#

Barnett guided the plane, identified by FAA records as a 1978 Grumman AA-5B, to the infield of the track. Once on the ground, the plane came to rest in a shallow culvert with damage to both the main and nose gears.
What is the current thinking amongst small single engine (guess it could apply to larger aircraft as well) aircraft landing on an unprepared surface with the gear UP or DOWN?

Discussion of the pros/cons?
