Recall that Compass was created and fully owned by NWA to operate 76-seat jets. No degree was required initially to be hired at Compass, and there were reciprocal flow rights between NWA and Compass with no qualification requirements, including a degree, for Compass pilots, as they were all hired by NWA's HR department.
Reciprocal flow rights between NWA and Mesaba were later agreed to as the result of a grievance settlement. Because they had not been hired by NWA, Mesaba pilots were subject to NWA's normal hiring standards in the flow agreement.
When Delta merged with NWA, Delta assumed both flow agreements. Because Delta requires a degree as part of its normal pilot hiring standards, Mesaba pilots are now subject to that requirement.
