As other's have touched on, I can't see that you did anything wrong in the scenario as you have described.
You had already acknowledged your sc assignment. You were not required to answer your phone at midnight. Per our contract you have no obligation to immediately respond to a long-call assignment during the two hours that you were on long-call (0000-0200, 10 prior to the start of your short call).
And yes, it seems they could have just given you the assignment at 1200 when your short call started. Why they didn't is a good question. It would have needed to be one very late ending day for duty day to have been an issue. You would have been legal until well after midnight (lesser of: table B plus 4 hours or 16 hours) as a short call pilot. Provided there weren't over 4 legs, unless I am mistaken, you would have been legal until 4am.
