My wife was a week overdue, but there were no signs that labor was imminent. Other than being a week overdue.
It was a very difficult decision to call off and go home (DAY to IAH, two flights a day 6 am and 6 pm). I had all of 10 hours sick time banked, and no assurance that we'd be going to delivery any time soon. But being up to 14 hours away from home was an intollerable situation as well. And God forbid I actually get a trip to someplace harder to get home from than DAY!
Being there for the birth of my son was the defining moment of my life. It fundamentally changed me forever. I'd trade
everything for it.
I love flying, but flying is meaningless compared to him.
This career has its pluses and its minuses. Compensation used to be a plus.
Now that compensation is a minus it is becoming harder to soberly say that on the whole being a pilot a good life.
