If it's something like a kid's graduation or a wedding, just do everything you can do to get that weekend off...try to drop, swap, request it off, etc. IF THAT ALL DOES NOT WORK, then talk to your Chief Pilot. Most likely, they will put a LUV tag on it and ask if you want it paid or unpaid. They have been pretty good about that. DO NOT call in sick (for many reasons.)
