If it's something like a kid's graduation or a wedding, just do everything you can do to get that weekend off...try to drop, swap, request it off, etc. IF THAT ALL DOES NOT WORK, then talk to your Chief Pilot. Most likely, they will put a LUV tag on it and ask if you want it paid or unpaid. They have been pretty good about that. DO NOT call in sick (for many reasons.)
I can't think of one reason not to call in sick if your not feeling well enough to fly. The DP isn't a reason either, it's been going on since long before it was in writing.
Do what you think is right. But a visit to the chiefs will not always get you luv... Your milage may vary greatly.
