Actually he is right about AA flying from MIA to the Caribbean, look at the route map:

AA also does a bunch of flights directly to the islands from Chicago, Dallas, and New York.
American shuttered the ATR connecting hub from SJU in favor of flying people directly from other hubs to the island they want to go to.
Why send people to SJU first when you can get them there faster on a direct flight?
The destinations that can't be served from the mainland and the local market are covered by codeshare with JetBlue and Seaborne.
SJU is simply not important enough of a market to waste brand new E-175s on. It is too low yielding because it is filled with vacation travelers looking for cheap fares and people cashing in miles.
