It doesn't have to be either/or though. Long after everything went electronic you could still walk someone in. All that meant was that someone would take a glance at it, but it was better than nothing and did help. Everyone hires off of electronic apps now, yet many places still have a supplimentary walk in system. Some are formal (Silver Bullet, Blue Dart, etc) and others are unofficial like CP meet and greets.
I have no idea what the advantage is for pretty much only DL to yield all selection criteria to a cyber engine, particularly when they still have a manual hand in the process when they want to (the extremely connected will always, always, always bypass "the system").
