If you could produce some piece of paper or legal document that shows that you are in fact what you claim - then you should claim it.

justdoingmyjob - I have no idea if they can ask you to prove it or not.
For my federal job the questions were asked but they SAY it is only for record keeping/demographics. In Oklahoma, if you are going to claim Native American status for the host of benefits afforded such claimants, you are going to have to provide some sort of proof of such status.
