FWIW- I was a single white male hired at DL (still white and male) with only a referral from a retired regular line pilot. Networking is key in aviation, but to say that who you know is everything is downright ignorant. It is a factor, but only one of many. Given the people that I work with, 99% of the time the screening has done it's job.
