So it got down to 12,000', aimed back toward the nearest suitable field, but the pilots were overcome by smoke/fumes and it flew on autopilot until it ran out of gas...somewhere, but not in East Africa!
Would knowing the altitude require the xponder to be on?, or can mil radar determine altitude w/o the xponder.

Way too many conflicting scenarios from way too many "sources".
