All of these schemes for picking up more time do nothing but delay people's upgrades to the next higher paying seat. We should be figuring out how to work FEWER hours, not more.

That same old school trade unionist would probably also be shocked that, 10 years later, we are still working for 18% less per hour, not adjusted for inflation. Some guys are going to do whatever they can, in accordance with the PWA and FAR's, to attempt to reduce that huge disparity in buying power/standard of living from 10 years ago. With realities such as 4-8-3-3 we obviously haven't figured how, even remotely, to work fewer hours without falling even further behind.
Having said that, I agree with tsquare in that no matter what we make there will always be a percentage who will keep up the same tactics to maximize pay instead of working less due to higher rates.
