I think a review of our USA Today add in 1995 and it's impact would show that it had little effect. If the goal was to get a contract that we wanted then it was a failure. As it was we didn't get a contract until Jan 1999 and then it wasn't the one we wanted.
The traditional methods used by pilot groups, adds, billboards, picketing, etc. may have been useful at one time, but I'm not sure they have any impact now. Besides in the cargo/express delivery sector customer loyalty is a dicey thing. FDX signed many UPS customers to long term contracts during the teamsters strike years ago. I'm sure they would love to return the favor.
I'm not arguing against action, I am saying it needs to be well thought out and properly targeted. Dropping a nuke will probably win you the battle, but what you're left with may not be worth owning.
