CaliBoy60, Just some basics: the traditional route is to 'Enlist' in a Guard unit having the type of Aircraft you want to fly. Then work your ass off at whatever job you get (pay your dues.) Network, let the unit know of your goals, but don't ass kiss the Pilots or Leadership. When you finish school, ask to be given consideration at the next pilot board. I've facilitated several hiring boards. In my experience Non-Prior service Pilot applicants are RARELY hired off the street to Guard Units. That is...unless your Father is a recently retired General....oh in that case having a DIU doesn't matter either. Doh! (tangent...apologies!) There is no guarantee you'll get picked up. You can re-apply for following boards... and you can apply to all the other units too. If you want to fly C-17's I'd apply to be a Loadmaster. They travel a lot and work directly with the pilots. If F-16's, maybe a Crew Chief or Life Support? Tons of dudes from the individual units directly and on APC that can help. ...and remember 80% of your Pilot Board will be based on what experience they already have of you and how detailed your application package is. The whole process is a ton of work plus all the training is challenging (some of it ASS PAIN) but in the end, you'll more than likely grow a ton, be challenged WAY more that at your airline and make some awesome friends that you bounce around the world with. Definitely worth it!! You'll undoubtedly get some help along the way so remember when it's your turn: help the next Bro out. That's what makes the Guard Community Great!
