Generally, DTW is blessed with a good operation that isn't delay prone, it has inexpensive hotels w/ transportation, so lodging costs are very reasonable, and it has enough flights per day to have a decent enough selection to provide backups.
Both ATL and NYC probably have more options from the SE/East coast, but both have higher lodging costs, and NYC is, well, NYC. Get stuck there in a hotel, and you're probably looking a two c-bills easy. The Baymont in DTW always has rooms, and is $43 out the door.
