Since you've got a hole-up position, what about leaving your HHG in temp storage, put essentials in a trailer, and wait till you get a good picture of what's going on before making your next move?
Then, figure out which junior base is your favorite and find a short-term lease. Then, in the odd chance you get an opportunity to grab a seat out West within that 1yr clock, you're still "agile" and haven't burned your final HHG move.
Great advice as well, and pretty much what we're planning on doing. Our additional "degree of difficulty", however, is a rising High School Junior. With that in mind, we're figuring we'll move to one of the junior domiciles (NYC, DTW or ATL) for at least two years (and probably five, since that will get Dash-2 through HS as well) before making the final move out west (unless we grow to love NYC or DTW
). Hence the point of my original post, trying to get a sense of what the situation's like for a NYC-based pilot living in base. Again, thanks to all for your advice.
