Jetblue premiums and deductibles are at Jetblue's discretion. Jetblue chose to gouge employees with a $2900 premium. Jetblue decided against allowing pilots to purchase "gap" insurance to cover the exorbitant premium because Jetblue claimed the $30 per month gap insurance would encourage greater use of the green plan therefore costing Jetblue more money.
This is something all new hires and those applying need to understand. The culture you believe exists at the airline does so provided it doesn't cost money. Jetblue is a business just like any other airline. Unions make airlines career destinations not management teams.
