I started class on December 31st and my last IOE trip for the 700 was on March 13th. Just some real world numbers for you. I'm short call right now, I haven't really bid yet tho. I felt / feel the same way. Ive gotten a little better at it, but still not a PBS guru. Ive flown with a couple Captains who are savvy with it and have provided some good tips. It's certainly a trial and error kind of system. The PBS home page has a link on the top left, "ONLINE DOCs". When I bid, I'll open that in a separate window and reference it while Im building my bid. There is an "Avoid Reserve" selection by the way. Take care.
