Disagree 100%... Nothing worse than a pilot group that looks like a bunch of similarly dressed automatons so rigid you could stick a lump of coal up their.... and get a diamond. A certain pilot group comes to mind (love y'all and have friends there but don't really dig the look...)

Optional = laid back. Wanna wear a hat, knock yourself out. Don't want to, don't. Important thing here is to look professional and classy but not to the point where everyone looks the SAME.

Hats went bye bye a couple decade ago. Many foreign airlines don't even wear them anymore. The modern, professional look is blazer with stripes (no leather, I agree) well pressed uniform, sans hat.
