I picketed at DFW during the NWA strike (along with lots of Delta bubbas) and American guys. One day, as we were taking a break from the walk of the living dead, the APA Chairman told us that they actually asked President Clinton to put them back to work. Something about killing the golden goose. Not a conspiracy theory, I heard the dude say it. Kinda crappy thing to tell guys actively on strike.
The politics get crazy during a strike. I forget the name of the administrations hit man, but he promised a $hit sandwich to both us and NWA management if we didn't settle.
So, will any president let us strike......it's a moot point, honest. Doesn't matter which party.

Well, you sort if proved that there is a difference. Regardless of whether APA asked for intervention, the message was that the pilots struck, the President pulled them back, but it can happen again if you don't negotiate... So negotiate.
Different animal than having a guy promise the nation (and management), that you won't be able to strike.
In terms of leverage with revenue, one version has headlines that say you struck, but prez is delaying the inevitable, the other version has "Prez Intervenes, no Strike". One version would let people book tickets with a degree of confidence, the other wouldn't.
Still, I agree with you guys that this isn't a black-or-white proposition (no pun intended).
