I had a person in travel tell me today that "I know there's no contractual basis for a backup, but that's still not allowed by our rules."

Oookay. Hopefully a steward can sort 'em out. Again.

I'll add that I don't think any of this is malicious; my former company was known to be outright malicious with contractual violations, requiring the union to drag them to grievance and arbitration hearings over every little thing. I simply think it's ignorance on the part of the people in scheduling and travel. They're just not standardized. I'd put money on the fact that I'll call back after the shift change and get a completely different answer.
