Jungle,
I am only making observations.
An all volunteer army is weaker than a drafted one. Certain personality types are definitely drawn to military service and a portion of them volunteer for duty that will be almost certain to cause human suffering. I think it must be akin to premeditation. There is no military left that will challenge our Air force or Navy to a proper fight. A US military pilots biggest hazzard is to himself. Our ground forces have only our planes up there to worry about.
Just last night I watched a war documentary about Iraq and these two pilots were giddy almost that they were able to drop real bombs on a war target. The documentary went on to show the ground damage. The results were that they missed the target and destroyed homes and wiped out several families. The pilots attitudes were unconcerned.
It takes a special person to drop a 2000 pound bomb on a clay hut and go home without regrets. Simply applying for the job of an aggressor pilot is to accept that you will have some blood on your hands before your time is through.
The opposite of that would be a rescue helicopter pilot. Those guys really do risk everything to save lives. The guy who drops into a cold and unsettles sea risking his own life to save others truley is a hero.
